NAME:
BEELZEBUB
AGE:
???
OCCUPATION:
Prince of Demons
Beelzebub is foremost in crime and power after Satan. He appears briefly in volume three, strongly opposed to Miu's presence. Although he obeys Satan and allows Miu to do as she will, he remains openly discourteous towards her, referring to her as "Human Girl" rather than by name. He eventually concedes that Satan has transformed her into quite a woman.
Beelzebub does not speak to his superior with the extreme formality that lesser demons must, but neither does he speak with the casual intimacy that Seera or Miu do. He is informal towards Satan, but by no means disrespectful. However, he is casual and blunt in his conduct towards all others.
In the case that Satan is unable to govern Hell, Beelzebub would be the one to take his place.
NAME MEANING AND ORIGIN:
Ba’al-zebub, whose name in Hebrew means “Lord of Flies,” is frequently called “Beelzebub,” though scholars assert that name to be incorrect. Originally the god of the Canaanites, it is said that Ba’al-zebub either (1) was represented with the figure of a fly, as he was prayed upon to keep flies away from harvests and sacrificial offerings; or (2) was originally worshipped as “Ba’al-zebul,” meaning “Lord of the High House” (implying “Lord of God’s Temple”), until the writer of Kings deemed this offensive and contemptuously changed his name to “Lord of Flies.” Ba’al-zebub is recognized as the fallen angel who destroys by means of tyrants, causes demons to be worshipped, arouses desires in priests, brings about jealousies and murders, and instigates wars. His title in Scripture is often “Prince of Demons,” and Milton calls him foremost in crime and power after Satan.
